Dr.Haroon has special interest in Development and implementation of Hospital Management Information System (HMIS). In pursuance of this interest he helped in the planning, development and implementation of HMIS at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) along with software developers.

As team leader for establishing and implementing the first HMIS system in a public sector hospital he saw a major turnaround in efficiency and staff productivity leading to better patient care.

PIMS is the Center of Excellence in medical field in Islamabad. All specialties are catered for in this hospital. It has a total of 8 subdivisions, which include Children Hospital, Mother and Child Health Center, College of Nursing and Paramedical College. In addition it is Postgraduate Medical Teaching Hospital affiliated with Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.

The great success of automation at PIMS was that the ownership of the project from initiation was with PIMS and it was the dept. of Pathology which took the lead. The process was slow and painstaking. Each step involved inputs from multiple disciplines and personnel.

A unique feature of automation at PIMS was the fact that it was initiated, implemented and maintained from 1996 to 2004 through donations and efforts of PIMS staff alone. Furthermore it was the first time that private sector supported PIMS for such a long duration for maintenance of the project.

The project was formalized when PIMS prepared a PC-1 and had it approved from the ministry of Information Technology (MoIT). MoIT provided hardware and networking and staff for training and maintenance of networking and software.

Presently PIMS is the only Public sector hospital to have a fully integrated HMIS system in which all activities from patient registration to Billing and discharge are computerized.

The depts. of Pathology, Radiology, Blood Bank and Stores are totally paperless. All staff members have been trained and are performing their activities on computers. A great success has been the training of staff of which over 70% used the computer for the first time. All staff members are now well versed with HMIS functions.

Reports of all hospital activities are available; these include registration and demographic reports, statistic reports, disease trends, work management reports, Accounts, Stores and Inventory, Human resource, wards etc. All cumulative data of patients is available, at any time.

For the first time in a public sector hospital a system of unique patient ID has been implemented and reliable and verifiable hospital data is being generated. Efforts are being made to analyze all this data in a manner, which will benefit the hospital its staff and ultimately the patient, who must be provided quality service within our given resources.
